Sabayon- Has Gentoo met its demise?

notanatheist's picture
Sabayon isn't really a beginners distribution but has much to offer. Geared more toward those using Arch, Gentoo, or LFS. Sabayon offers binary package installation as well as support for Gentoo's portage. Use caution when mixing and NEVER "emerge world".

Anathem - a review

In a review, it's always a good thing to know where the reviewer is coming from.
With that in mind, a short history of my Neal Stephenson book history would be in order:

Using lh_build to test Debian Lenny

Lenny is on his way soon, having already been frozen. For those on a Debian-based system (including Ubuntu), you can easily create yourself a Lenny livecd for testing and bug hunting.

First, you'll need to install the live-helper package:

# aptitude install live-helper

Then configure the various directories needed for the lh-build process:

$ lh_config

If you give no parameters, you will get the default image, currently etch. However, for lenny, we need to pass a few options:

Scripts for viewing Olympic video

So, NBC is putting quite a bit of video online at nbcolympics.com.

However, if you decide to try and check out a bit of backstage action on your linux box, you'll be told (politely) "Go away, kid, ya bother me".

However, the intrepid folks over in the Ubuntu forums have come up with a way, albeit convoluted, for those of us on the fringes to take part. Basically, they've created 3 different scripts to parse the Olympic site and parse out the stream urls, which you can then pass into your favorite media player.

What’s cryptology? Cryptology is making and breaking codes. It’s so cool. We make codes so we can send secret messages to our friends. And we try to figure out what other people are writing about by breaking their codes. It’s a lot of fun. http://www.nsa.gov/kids/home_html.cfm

To step across the line. Penguins are like that.

Speeding Up Fsck With Metaclustering

I saw this story talking about adding "Metaclustering" to ext3 and back porting to ext2 to speed up fsck. It's not online fsck but close enuff. Who knows how long it will take for ext4 to be production stable.
