I've used the Windows installers of GIMP, have even used the 2.0beta. It
did require an active console to be open for debugging but it worked well.
As for 3D design, I stumbled across "ac3d" a while back and quite like
it's simplicity. Blender boggles me and is probably more than I need.
k3d rings a bell but I'm not sure if I tried it. I believe ac3d exports
to renderman compatible files. It is a non free program but runs
natively (binary even) under linux. I used the trial and I like it but
I've only toyed with it a few times. I don't have enough use to actually
buy it. If it were something I used frequently (weekly or more) I'd
probably buy it.
