The EEE-PC would probably work well for you.
I have not reloaded the OS.
I use it as a consumer device - just as it comes from the factory.
I have not upgraded the OS or anything and it works fine for me.
I use ssh and scp to attach to my servers.
I even use ssh -X to open X based apps on remote boxes and send them
back to the EEE-PC.
This work fine, except the EEE-PC screen is a long ways from 768x1024.
I use firefox to connect to web sites.
I use OpenOffice to do a little writing and what not.
I also use OpenOffice to give presentations.
The EEE-PC has been great for giving presentations for ME.
However, my presentations are technical and don't involve many photographs.
My wife just used it to give a travel log with lots of photographs and wasn't
happy with the quality of graphics coming from the EEE-PC to the projector.
I have owned mine since November or December of 2007. I have not abused
the machine; but I have traveled with it quite a bit including taking
it on a back
packing trip in Mali where it was exposed to the dusk and dirt of the
Sahara desert.
So far, my EEE-PC is in good shape. The battery life (about 2 hours) never
was good, but seems to be as long now as it ever was.

P.S. By the way, for some reason the stock distribution on the EEE-PC does
not have an ftp client. That seems strange to me, but I haven't installed one
as I rarely need ftp on it.
