[Eug-lug] choosing Debian

Disclaimer: I am a newbie, not an expert.

Debian comes in a few distributions: stable (2.2), testing (2.4.25) and
unstable (2.6.?). I've used both testing and stable (upgraded to 2.6
from 2.2 with no trouble). I'd recommend installing a base "testing" or
"stable" system from one of the CD sets available at:

http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/

Or there's always net-install, my favored method (using naught but 3
floppies to bring a system up from empty to desktop environment is fun.)
Minimal CD image (installs fully functional base system with utilities,
drivers, etc) is at:

http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/

I tried the Knoppix hd-install script but ran into lots of trouble, and
went for the debian net-install in that case.

Cheers,
Max
