Sounds like pseudo-terminals (ptys) aren't working.  Verify by trying
some non-X11 programs that require ptys such as ssh (inbound), script
or screen.  I bet they don't work either.

Did you build your own kernel?  Did you include pty support?  Or maybe
you need to mount the /dev/pts filesystem?
