Then pty's aren't the problem.  Nevermind.

Try running xterm under strace and see where it fails/stops.

    # strace xterm -display :0 

Also, if you have a konsole that hangs, see what "ps fax" shows.
It should show something like this.

	kdeinit: konsole
	 \_ -bin/bash
