Funny you mention this. I just read lots about it last night.
The transmitter doesn't have to go in the the shoe. You can use
it with any sneakers. You can velcro the thing to the top of
your shoe. It's an accelerometer which just detects the motion.
The reason it's designed strictly for the Nano is the 5G ipod is
HD based and not for running. Apple doesn't want to have to deal
with warranty issues. At least, that's speculation that I've
read.
